SURROUNDING AREA
Saltwood
A village nestling in the wooded hills above the sea next to the thriving Cinque Port of Hythe, Kent.
The name Saltwood derives from its past of salt production, large wood fires were used to evaporate the water off the salt.
In the Doomsday survey of 1080 A.D. the land was held by the Knight, Hugo de Montfort for the Archbishop of Canterbury and had a crude Norman Castle. The church dates from 1100 A.D.
The development is off Bartholomew Lane which takes its name from the house of hospitality which was founded by the Bishop of Rochester in 1336 A.D.
The Castle at Saltwood has a chequered history and became associated with one of the most lurid incidents in English history. Following Henry ll outcry against Thomas a Beckett four Knights travelled from France to Saltwood Castle where they plotted, thence to Canterbury Cathedral, to carry out the death of Beckett, before returning to Saltwood and then into exile.
Among other notable visitors were Edward ll and Queen Elizabeth l who dined there with Sir Walter Raleigh, the last Archbishop to live at the castle was Thomas Cranmer.
Today the village has the Castle Hotel public house, local shops, schools and a thriving community. The village is served by Sandling Railway Station which has regular services to Ashford International only 10 minutes away, Dover priory 20 minutes and London in 90 minutes.
The M20 motorway is 5 minutes drive, as is the nearest large supermarket and petrol station, Ashford is 15 minutes away as is Dover and Canterbury is only a 20 minute drive.
